“Jungle Jungle Baat Chali Hai Pata Chala Hai” – if you remember this song, then you must’ve seen the Hindi version of the 90s anime The Jungle Book, also known as Jungle Book Shonen Mowgli in its original Japanese version.

The English and Hindi versions of the show are simply known as The Jungle Book (जंगल बुक). It first aired in India in 1992 on the national broadcaster, Doordarshan. The show was dubbed in Hindi, and its opening theme, “Jungle Jungle Baat Chali Hai,” became a popular jingle on 90s Doordarshan. The same dub and its Hindi opening theme were re-broadcast on DD2, Zee TV, Sahara Manoranjan, POGO, and Filmy over the years.

Song Details

Unlike the Japanese and English versions of the opening theme, which were performed by women, the Hindi opening was performed by a group of child singers, credited in the outro of the original Doordarshan broadcast as Amol, Hiya, Neha, Gautam, Vishal, and Dipti.

The ending sequence of the Hindi-dubbed version uses the same theme song as the intro, with credits written in Devanagari Hindi (हिन्दी) script over a black background, along with animation and images from the original Japanese ending theme.

About the Song

The lyrics of the song were written by National Award-winning Hindi poet and lyricist Gulzar, while the music was composed and arranged by National Award-winning director and composer Vishal Bharadwaj. In an interview with the India Today Magazine, Bhardwaj said that the song was his first big success before he composed the music for the Bollywood film Maachis, four years later in 1996.

Doordarshan attempted to change the lyrics of the song by replacing the word “chaddi” with something like “pant” or “lungi” in the intro theme. However, Gulzar firmly believed in his vision that Mowgli was a child who bloomed like a flower. He insisted that the song would either include “chaddi” as he wrote it or not be used at all.

Amol Sahdev, the lead singer of the song, mentioned in an interview with Hindustan Times that he was just 9 years old when he first performed the song in 1992 with other child artists. This was around 2016 when a new version of the song “Jungle Jungle Baat Chali Hai” was released in India.

The new version of the song was recorded as promotional material for Disney’s live-action adaptation of The Jungle Book in India. Lyricist Gulzar and composer Vishal Bharadwaj reunited again to re-create the iconic tune with a new generation of child singers.
