While Netflix featured a few anime titles on its platform from the start, a dedicated anime strategy didn’t emerge until 2017. This period of limited action meant that Hindi dubbed anime on Netflix remained a distant prospect for most Indian anime fans.
In 2018, Netflix began investing heavily in anime and Asian media, marked by the release of Devilman Crybaby, one of its first Netflix Original Anime. This was part of a broader strategy to expand their library for a global audience and future-proof their content offerings in anticipation of losing titles to new OTT platforms like Disney+, HBO Max, and Amazon Prime Video.
The post-pandemic anime wave led to the addition of Hindi dubbed anime on Netflix India, which acted as a localization strategy beginning from 2020.
In January 2020, Netflix India announced a lineup of Ghibli films for its platform, with a planned release around the first quarter of that year.
A total of 21 Ghibli films were announced, dubbed in 20 languages, including Hindi (with 6 films). Netflix introduced the first two Hindi dubbed Ghibli films, My Neighbor Totoro and Kiki’s Delivery Service, on January 31, 2020. In the following months, Hindi dubs of other Ghibli titles, such as Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Howl’s Moving Castle and Ponyo were also released.
Around the same time, the CGI anime remake film Pokémon: Mewtwo Strikes Back – Evolution and Netflix’s original anime film Altered Carbon: Resleeved were also made available with Hindi dubs.
NETFLIX Originals and Acquired Anime IPs in Hindi on Netflix
Following the release of Altered Carbon: Resleeved on March 19, 2020, Netflix increased its acquisition and production of anime IPs and Netflix Original Anime, many of which were also released in Hindi.
Exclusive anime series such as Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045, Baki Hanma and the Korean-anime Lookism were released in Hindi and became highly successful with fans. Netflix also acquired worldwide streaming rights for popular IPs like Detective Conan, releasing its spin-off series Zero’s Tea Time and The Culprit Hanzawa in Hindi dub, along with Doraemon movies like Stand by Me 1 and Stand by Me 2.
