Background of Anime on Sony YAY!
Although Obbochama-kun on Sony YAY! aired way back in 2021, making it the first anime on the channel. Sony YAY’s major anime journey began with Naruto in 2022, which aired all 220 episodes in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Bangla.
Following its success, Naruto Shippuden premiered in March 2024 with a brand-new multilingual dub. The channel aired the first 220 episodes (out of 500) from March to November 2024. After that, Naruto Shippuden was put on hold, and the channel began re-runs of both Naruto and Naruto Shippuden starting November 11, 2024.
During this period, Sony YAY! had no formal “anime block” or branding, but the 9:00 PM – 11:00 PM time slot was effectively reserved for anime content on weekdays.

In March 2025, Sony YAY! announced a new programming partnership with Crunchyroll, marking the start of a dedicated anime block on Indian television. Branded content under this collaboration began airing from April 1, 2025, starting with Crunchyroll’s logo appearing during the 10:00 PM – 11:00 PM slot.
While the overall anime schedule on Sony YAY! ran from 9 PM to 11 PM (later extended to midnight), only the 10–11 PM slot carried Crunchyroll branding. This was because Crunchyroll had acquired the rights to Sony YAY!’s Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu dubs of Naruto and Naruto Shippuden and began uploading them to their platform starting April 12, 2025.
It’s important to note that no new anime premiered under the Crunchyroll label on Sony YAY!—the content consisted entirely of reruns from the Naruto franchise during this hour.
Sony YAY Anime Block vs Crunchyroll Block: What’s the Difference?
While both aired anime during prime time, the Sony YAY! anime block and the Crunchyroll block were not the same thing.
Sony YAY! had already been dubbing anime like Naruto Shippuden and later Jujutsu Kaisen well before the Crunchyroll partnership. These shows featured original Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu dubs produced by Sony YAY!, often with newly recorded voice casts and localized adaptations.
