In a sudden and disheartening development for anime fans across India, Tata Play Anime Local has been discontinued across both television and the Tata Play mobile app. The channel, which recently rebranded to Crunchyroll Anime Local in May 2025, is no longer accessible to viewers as of June 2025.

What Happened to Anime Local?
While there has been no official statement from Tata Play or Sony Pictures Networks India (SPNI), rumors suggest an internal fallout between Tata Play and SPNI, the parent company behind Sony YAY! and Crunchyroll India.
Interestingly, this discontinuation comes just weeks after the Crunchyroll Anime Local branding was launched in collaboration with SPNI. The sudden move has led to heavy speculation about a potential licensing or partnership dispute between the two media giants.
Adding to the mystery, Tata Play has set all Anime Local promotional videos on YouTube and Instagram to private, further fueling speculation that something serious is unfolding behind the scenes.
Meanwhile, Airtel Continues Crunchyroll Partnership
In contrast, Airtel Digital TV’s FAST channel — formerly Anime Booth, now Crunchyroll Anime Booth — remains active. On June 10th, 2025, Sony YAY! posted a new promo for Jujutsu Kaisen airing on Crunchyroll Anime Booth, with the caption:
“Jujutsu Kaisen is BACK! Catch the action, the curses, and the sorcery. Now streaming again on Crunchyroll Anime Booth. Starts tomorrow, 11th June. Don’t miss it!!”
This public endorsement of Airtel’s channel by Sony YAY! — on the same day Tata Play pulled Anime Local — suggests a clear rift in the partnership between SPNI and Tata Play.
